Betty, Amos, and Bobby Gum: The Early Years
Mary Lee Floyd and Harry Omaha Gum were married on March 21, 1925. Their first child, Jesse Amos, was born on March 30, 1926.
Nancy Elizabeth (Betty Nan) was born on April 23, 1927. Their third child, Barbara Jo, was born in 1930.
Betty, Amos, and Bobby grew up on the family farm between Alton and Thomasville, Missouri. They each attended school at Alton. Amos and Betty started school at Smyrna, but Smyrna only had school for eight months, so they went to Alton for the remainder of their school days. Betty began school a year early. She insisted on going to school with Amos when he started. She said he was shy and needed her to talk for him. After graduation from high school, each of the Gum children attended the University of Missouri. Betty and Barbara became Home Economics teachers, and Amos returned to the family farm. He later became a supervisor for the MFA Feeder Pig Division.
