SKEPTICS AND NAY-SAYERS

*CATO Institute. Global Warming books, articles, studies, etc.

Climate Debate Daily "is intended to deepen our understanding of disputes over climate change and the human contribution to it. The site links to scientific articles, news stories, economic studies, polemics, historical articles, PR releases, editorials, feature commentaries, and blog entries. The main column on the left includes arguments and evidence generally in support of the IPCC position on the reality of significant anthropogenic global warming. The right-hand column includes material skeptical of the IPCC position and the notion that anthropogenic global warming represents a genuine threat to humanity."

Climate Film Draws a Rebuke. By Andrew C. Revkin. Published July 22, 2008, New York Times. -- "A controversial British documentary called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' unfairly portrays several scientists and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Britain’s television watchdog agency ruled on Monday. The agency, the Office of Communication, issued a report rebuking Channel 4 in Britain, which broadcast 'Swindle' last year. But the report said the film, while 'intemperate' in its characterizations of the dominant scientific view that humans are the main force in warming the planet, 'did not materially mislead the audience so as to cause harm or offense.'"

Climate panic only so much hot air. By Mona Charen. Published Sunday, October 21, 2007, Columbia Daily Tribune.

Emissions cap-and-trade plan is a government boondoggle. By George F. Will.  Published June 5, 2008, Columbia Daily Tribune. - "An unprecedentedly radical government grab for control of the U.S. economy will be debated when the Senate considers saving the planet by means of a cap-and-trade system to ration carbon emissions. The plan is co-authored - with John Warner - by Joe Lieberman, an ardent supporter of John McCain, who supports Lieberman’s legislation and recently spoke about 'the central facts of rising temperatures, rising waters and all the endless troubles that global warming will bring.' Speaking of endless troubles, 'cap-and-trade' comes cloaked in reassuring rhetoric about the government merely creating a market, but government actually would create a scarcity so government could sell what it has made scarce."

Evangelicals question man-made warming. Published May 24, 2008, Columbia Daily Tribune. Washington (Associate Press). -- "A coalition of conservative evangelical leaders wants to enlist 1 million Christians to sign a statement questioning whether human-caused global warming is a real threat and arguing that restrictive environmental policies harm poor people. The 'We Get It!' campaign is the latest development in an ongoing disagreement among evangelicals about climate change. 'Our stewardship of creation must be based on biblical principles and factual evidence,' the statement says. 'We face important environmental challenges, but must be cautious of claims that our planet is in peril from speculative dangers like man-made global warming.'"

Man’s climate role unproved. Group ignores science showing historical change. By S. Fred Singer. Published June 3, 2008, Columbia Daily Tribune. - "In June 2007, the Royal Society of London, the world’s oldest science academy... published a pamphlet titled '‘Climate Change Controversies: a simple guide.' It was designed to undermine the scientific case of climate skeptics. The Society presented what it called "misleading arguments" on global warming and then tried to shoot them down.... The Royal Society thus adopts the IPCC claim that current warming is almost certainly anthropogenic - human-caused - but presents no independent evidence to support such a claim.... In its pamphlet, the Royal Society purports to speak on behalf of a consensus of scientists. But no such consensus exists...."

Obama offers fairy-tale promises. By George F. Will. Published August 24, 2008, Columbia Daily Tribune. Washington -- "Barack Obama has made his economic thinking excruciatingly clear, so it also is clear that his running mate should be Rumpelstiltskin. He spun straw into gold, a skill Obama will need in order to fulfill its fairy-tale promises. Obama recently said he would ‘require that 10 percent of our energy comes from renewable sources by the end of my first term - more than double what we have now.’ Note the verb ‘require’ and the adjective ‘renewable.’ By 2012 he would ‘require’ the economy’s huge energy sector to - here things become comic - supply half as much energy from renewable sources as already is being supplied by just one potentially renewable source...."

*Still Waiting for Greenhouse, A Lukewarm View of Global Warming. This site was founded by the late Australian global-warming skeptic John Daly.

Warming hysteria an excuse to tax us. By Walter Williams. Published Friday, September 28, 2007. Columbia Daily Tribune - "Despite increasing evidence that man-made carbon dioxide is not a significant greenhouse gas and contributor to climate change, politicians and others who wish to control our lives must maintain that it is. According to the Detroit Free Press, Rep. John Dingell wants a 50-cents-a-gallon tax on gasoline.... Dingell also wants to eliminate the mortgage tax deduction on what he calls 'McMansions,' homes that are 3,000 square feet and larger. That’s because larger homes use more energy."

*Your voices are being heard. By Barry Hart, Rural Missouri, August 2008. -- "The problem with the weather, Mark Twain once said, is that everyone is talking about it but no one is doing anything about it. For some time I have been visiting with you in this monthly column about a perfect storm that is brewing as Congress considers climate change legislation. We call it a perfect storm because at the same time rates are on the rise due to increased demand and rising fuel costs, Congress is considering new measures that could do to electric rates what is already happening at the pumps.... This spring our attention has been on a climate change bill known as the Lieberman-Warner bill. That bill sought to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases essentially by punishing any industry that uses fossil fuels, and passing the high costs on to their consumers, which in our case is you. Debate on this bill came to a head in the U.S. Senate the first week in June. That bill died, based partly on the fact that electric cooperative members sent nearly 200,000 e-mails to voice their concern over the possibility that this bill, if passed, would have significantly increased electricity and other energy costs...."

Global Warming Myths and Facts (Environmental Defense)

NASA set to launch 'CO2 hunter'. By Jonathan Amos, BBC News, December 18, 2008. -- "The US space agency is set to launch a satellite that can map in detail where carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere. Nasa's Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) will pinpoint the key locations on the Earth's surface where CO2 is being emitted and absorbed. CO2 from human activities is thought to be driving climate changes, but important facts about its movement through the atmosphere remain elusive."

*Not-So-Permafrost: Big Thaw of Arctic Soil May Unleash Runaway Warming. New estimates show that frozen Arctic soil contains far more potential greenhouse gas than previously recognized--and could speed climate change as it melts. By David Biello, August 26, 2008, Scientific American. -- "'Drunken' trees listing wildly, cracked highways and sinkholes—all are visible signs of thawing Arctic permafrost. When this frozen soil warms, it releases carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases as microbes start to thrive on the organic material it contains—a potentially potent source of uncontrollable climate change. Now new research published in Nature Geoscience shows that such frozen Arctic soil holds nearly twice as much of the organic material that gives rise to planet-warming greenhouse gases as previously estimated."
