Note inside: Briefly, we have attempted to show you the cometance (sic) of our musical director. Here now is how we work with him. When we have arrived at an approved approach... approoved (sic) copy line, slogans and so forth, wh (sic) meet with our musical director and gave him this material explaning the how and whys. We tell him the basic "FEEL" we want as far as musical treatment is concerned. He woodsheds it and submits a simple piano vocal audition. often he explains the instrumentation and vocal colorings he desires to create the final effect. First we are going to play for you the piano-vocal audition submitted for Braniff Airways. The the (sic) finished spot. You'll note how vastly different the are. Obviously an audition can only give a melodic structural idea. We most confidently await finished production to appreciate the real and full value of the spot in question. Here is an audition for Goetz Beer... and we have to admitt (sic) "it's pretty pedestrian. But see what Les Brown and the Band of renown did for this simple melody. Now... let's get down to cases. Here, then... are three ideals for Russell Stover Candies. We have OUR favorite... let's see if you agree. What you are hearing is a musical commercial produced under the supervision of Potts Woodbury Advertising by Kansas City producer Warren Durrett. If you listen to the radio at all, you will be familiar with some... or many... or all of the examples of Durrett's work which is to follow. In order to conserve your valuable time we wont play these examples in their entirety... instead we will play only enough of each to give you an example of Durretts versitility (sic) in creative musical commercials. When these examples are finished... we will attempt to illustrate how we work with such a producer... how we solve the age-old problem of auditions. Now here's more of Durrett's work. Note on back: Excellent Bill Brewer narrated audition tape presentation to secure Russell Stover jingle job for Potts-Woodbury & Durrett Productions, 1959.
