Joe F. Donaldson is Professor of Higher and Continuing Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. In this role Donaldson teaches courses on the adult learner, organization and administration of higher and continuing education, program planning, and continuing education for the professions. His current research and writing focus on three closely related programmatic areas - (1) leadership and organization of university continuing education, (2) continuing education for the professions, and (3) adult higher education. Donaldson has addressed these topics in over 80 publications, including refereed journal articles, books, and book chapters. His articles are published in the Adult Education Quarterly, the Review of Higher Education, Medical Education, and The Journal of Continuing Higher Education, among others. His book chapters and books have been published by Jossey-Bass, Teachers College Press, Krieger, Pergamon publishers, and the University Continuing Education Association.

Donaldson has served on MU's doctoral faculty since 1992. He has directed 26 doctoral dissertations and advises about 20 doctoral and masters students annually.

Donaldson is a consulting editor for the Adult Education Quarterly and is on the editorial board of The Journal of Continuing Higher Education. He has received numerous awards for his research and publications, including the 2002 Research and Scholarship Award from the University Continuing Education Association for long-term commitment to conducting exemplary research that has made a significant contribution to the literature and professional practice of the field of continuing higher education.
Donaldson holds a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a Ph.D. in continuing education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
